Hardwood flooring is known for its timeless beauty and durability. Installing hardwood flooring in your home can raise your homes value because hardwoods last between 25-100 years depending on the product. Also there are various wood species to choose from and you can install it in any room to compliment any theme.
Types of Hardwoods
There are two main types of hardwood to choose from when considering installing hardwood floors, Solid hardwood and Engineered hardwood.
Solid Hardwood
Solid hardwood is composed entirely of one species of wood and is usually really thick at about 3/4 of an inch with a width of that varies between 2 1/4 to 5 inches. This type of wood is installed using a nail down method and needs wood subfloor to be properly installed. Solid hardwood can come pre stained from the factory saving time in the installation process or you can get it stained on-site and choose from a variety of colors. Because solid hardwood is so thick, you are able to sand and re-stain multiple times extending the life of your floors for years.
Engineered Hardwood
Engineered hardwood is composed of premium plywood material that acts as backing for the wood layer that sits on top of this board. Thickness varies between 3/8ths to 3/4ths of an inch with a width that varies between 3 – 7.5 inches. Engineered hard wood can be installed using glue to adhere directly to the subfloor of either concrete or plywood. We do however recommend using some type of underlayment to protect against any humidity that may penetrate your subfloor. In addition to glue you can nail down like you would a solid hardwood or float it like you would a laminate type floor. Engineered hardwood can come pre-finshed or raw. It’s important to note the wear layer an engineered floor has because that determines if the flooring can be refinished. Look for wear layer between 2-6 millimeters if you want to extend the life of your floor.
